Following the passage HB 1665, relative to student eligibility for the education freedom accounts program, Senator Altschiller issued the following statement:Senator Debra Altschiller (D-Stratham), stated, “We as legislators have a duty to be responsible stewards of taxpayer dollars and ensure that all students have access to an education that will prepare them for the future. The runaway train that has become the EFA program accomplishes neither of those duties, and in fact, flies in direct opposition to them.“With little to no oversight over the EFA program, no auditing of participants, and unclear outcomes for students, it is unfathomable that we are once again expanding this program only 10 months since the last expansion– all while the Senate Republicans continue to refuse to place any meaningful guardrails on this program.“As the state is already facing multiple court cases for under-funding public education, diverting even more money to the EFA program can only be seen for what it is, a coordinated attack to cripple our public school system in favor of private, often religious schools, that pick and choose their body and then, and segregate children into belief systems.”

NH residents fight state budget cuts to Medicaid, USNH, mental health care

“This budget bankrupts our future—and Senate Republicans are laughing about it.”CONCORD, NH — As the Senate begins its work on the state budget, Senate Republicans made one thing clear this afternoon: they do not want to hear from the public.During today’s Senate Finance Committee hearing, Republican Chair Senator James Gray called for a show-of-hands vote on whether to hold additional public budget hearings outside Concord. Both Senate Democrats on the committee voted in favor of giving Granite Staters a chance to weigh in. The Republican majority, while laughing, voted no—a direct insult to the working families, seniors, and young people who will be hit hardest by this budget.“This is not the New Hampshire way,” said Senate Democratic Leader Rebecca Perkins Kwoka. “This budget will force working families to pay more for health care, property taxes, and basic services—yet Senate Republicans think it’s a joke. This year, the Senate Democrats brought forward multiple bills to prevent gun violence in New Hampshire. New Hampshire has already faced an active shooter who had the clear intention of committing a mass casualty incident, we have already seen multiple attempts of shootings at New Hampshire schools, and we have seen countless incidents of gun violence across the state. Recognizing that reality, the Senate Democrats sponsored legislation this year requiring mandatory background checks for commercial gun purchases, allowing for a judge to implement extreme risk protection orders, establishing waiting periods, and instituting gun-free school zones. In response to these efforts, the Republicans showed no interest in addressing gun violence in New Hampshire with anything more than thoughts, prayers, and claims that New Hampshire is different. This irresponsible decision by the Senate Republicans places all of us, especially our children, at risk in our homes, our schools, our hospitals, our places of worship, the State House, and, in fact, everywhere across New Hampshire. Regardless of the Senate Republicans’ refusal to take any meaningful action to combat gun violence, Senate Democrats will continue to fight for measured and responsible efforts to prevent gun violence that respect the Second Amendment. <h3>Over 80 Granite Staters Showed Up Last Night to Oppose Radical Republican Cuts</h3>HAMPTON, NH — Following last night’s packed listening session in Hampton, Senate Democrats are expanding their efforts and launching a statewide tour—bringing the conversation about this dangerous budget directly to communities across New Hampshire. Senate Democrats will visit Laconia, Concord, Gorham, Merrimack, Andover, and Bedford over the coming weeks to bring people together and&nbsp; highlight how this dangerous budget would hurt Granite State families and undermine the health, safety, and well-being of their communities.Over 80 people joined Senate Democratic Leader Rebecca Perkins Kwoka and Senate Democratic Floor Leader Debra Altschiller to discuss this proposal that makes deep cuts to critical services while defending tax breaks for corporations and the ultra-wealthy.“This budget isn’t just out of step — it’s out of touch,” said Perkins Kwoka. “It cuts out housing and childcare. Concord, NH—The New Hampshire Senate Democratic Caucus announced today that, following a previous record-breaking report in June, it has broken the fundraising record for this reporting period. Raising over $321,000 and closing with around $300,000 cash-on-hand, this is the strongest financial position any New Hampshire caucus has ever reported at this point in the cycle.The previous fundraising record for this window was $255,653.73, set by House Democrats in 2023.This filing also reflects remarkable momentum. Without the appropriate levels of housing stock, businesses will continue to face a tight job market, stunting our economic growth. This also means individuals and families must have hard conversations about their futures- whether they can afford to start a family, where they can afford to live, and what opportunities they can take on, like running for or serving in one of our many volunteer positions and agencies across the state.Our communities need to have the ability to be more adaptive to their individual needs and allow for increased opportunities when it comes to their zoning structures. Senate Republicans Prepared to Pass State Budget that Raises Taxes, Makes Massive Cuts to Services

It cannot be denied that the rights of women across the country are under attack. We have seen states move to enact restrictions on reproductive health care that can only be described as inhumane and, at times, even archaic. Also, we continue to await multiple court decisions that could have serious implications for Granite Staters’ access to reproductive health care. This constantly changing landscape has created fear and uncertainty across New Hampshire regarding reproductive freedom.Recognizing this, the Senate Democrats have filed multiple pieces of legislation this term to protect a women’s right to choose and expand access to care. Instead of working with us to do so, Senate Republicans rejected placing the question of a right to an abortion on the ballot and moved to develop a reporting system on every single individual receiving abortion care in the state that will also require an ultrasound be performed at every abortion, regardless of the stage of pregnancy.The Senate Democrats know that Granite Staters want women to have their rights protected and that they trust women to make decisions about their own health. Regardless of the obstacles we face, the Senate Democrats will never give up the fight to kick politicians out of the exam room once and for all.
